There are a few reasons why I prefer to eat fruit and vegetables that are in season. For my clients who order fresh cold-pressed juices, I use in-season produce as it is not only cheaper but also supports the environment by eating fruit and veggies when they are naturally available.
4 Benefits of Eating What’s in Season
- In-season produce has naturally ripened and has been harvested at the right time, so they taste better and fresher! Avoid produce that has been chilled for long periods or that has been artificially ripened in hothouses.
- It is cheaper on your budget to buy in-season produce. When farmers have an abundant harvest, the cost of the produce goes down. I also prefer to buy what the local farmers offer, not only to support local businesses but also to reduce transport and storage costs.
- By eating what is in season, you are doing your bit for the environment. By lowering the demand for out-of-season produce, you reduce the need for hothouses, refrigeration, and transport of produce.
- Eating with the seasons support your body’s natural nutrition needs for each season, for example, winter vegetables for hearty soups, and sweet fruits for summer to boost your energy!
